Server configuration.. better to free up space??

I have a mac mini server and 6TB external. The server is 2 500GB currently storing and running time machine and the external RAID 1. Would it be more efficient to store all the data on the external drive and free up the server space or does it not matter. Looking for advice. I will be using the server to store and access A/V Files.
