Since March 3 update to OS X 10.9.2 my internet is running very slow.

I have contacted support several times and still no resolution. It is intermittent, but mostly slow to load pages. They have run diagnostics, and then after a while it seems to self fix. Feels like the pipe is being clogged up. Yes, I am wifi, but signal strength is strong. What to do?

Here is my EtreCheck

Hi, this has worked for a few...

Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

If using Wifi/Airport...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

Click OK.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.

  • Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
  • Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware. Any change?
  • If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
  • Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
  • If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
  • Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
  • Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
  • Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
  • Boot in safe mode and test. Any difference?
  • Boot into Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
  • If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change? (NO change)
  • Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware. Any change? (No Change, have the latest update)
  • If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference? (not possible to connect via cable)
  • Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same? (our laptop, mini ipad, phones are all on the same wifi, and they run perfect, fast)
  • If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same? (cannot connect to more than one network)

Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones? Just internet browers, did load Chrome, and same issue.

Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent? problem intermittent, starts off okay in the morning, then as day progresses get worse, slower, page loads are near 2 -3 minutes at times if at all.

(yes faster)
  • If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference? (not sure how to do this)

Thank you for your help. I am a novice with Mac, but I am trying my best. I have done the safe mode and recovery mode with Apple Support, and I have had my air port card changed too.

Hmmm.

I was able to change the service order to have wifi at the top.

With one of the apple care agents I did do something withteh DNS servers and changed tehm to 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. Not sure about the instructions about clicking on the Wifi icon at the top, I am already connected to my home network. What would I do with the add other network, it would be the same? Also it is normal for it to contiunously look for a new network

If you're sure that Safari performed better in Recovery, but not in safe mode, and that changing DNS servers made no difference, then see below.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
