Memory Upgrade for iMac 21.5 Mid 2010

I have an iMac 21.5 inch Mid 2010 with 4GB of RAM (2GB in each slot) installed, with two more available memory slots. I wish to add more memory but I was wondering if I could fill in the two available slots with 4GB each. That makes the total memory 12GB (quite uncommon and non-standard). Or do I have to be consistent and install only 2GBx2 to the two availble slots? That makes the total memory only 8GB.

I appreciate any help from anyone.

Best regards,

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

It will work fine if you put 2 4GB modules in the open slots.
