What are the steps to go to the backlight in settings and turn it on?

The screen is still showing. If you bring the iPod near a bright light, or shine a flashlight on it, you will be able to read the screen with no backlight.
On my 5th gen iPod nano, it is
Settings -> General -> Backlight -> [select setting]
