Regular SMS messages delivered/read receipts?

iMessage offers delivered/read reciepts but regular SMS messages do not. This has never been supported on the iPhone. Why & anything possible??? This is really ridiculous waiting for their reply without knowing our message is delivered to them or NO!

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1

So simple iMessages giving Delivered/Read Receipts but whereas normal messeages doesnt have that. You can just go to your inbox & check iMessages and SMS. Under the iMessage you can see delivered or read but you will see nothing under the SMS!

SMS, old technology has 160 character limits and is piggybacked on phone lines.

iMessage is not simple compared to SMS (which is simple)

iMessage allows users to send texts, documents, photos, videos, contact information, and group messages over Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G or LTE to other iOS or OS X users, thus providing an alternative to standard SMS/MMS messaging for most users with devices running iOS 5 or later.

Hello,

Did you find the solution to your problem. I have recently shifted to iphone and it was strange to see, i cannot turn on or off read receipts for regular messages. I don't understand why carrier is being targeted; as all the services provided by carrier can be assessed or examined, only if an option exists in the Phone. After transition, my earlier messages from my android phone have been copied and i can see the read receipt time of them in my iPhone but the once i sent from my iphone; i am still struggling to find, if they have been delivered and read by the recipient.

And you will keep struggling, as the SMS protocol does not use TCP/IP and does not allow read/receipt notifications. If you want to do that, you need an abstraction layer which must be supported by the carrier. No OS in the world can do that, it is how SMS work. You can get a confirmation that your SMS has been sent or not, but not when the SMS has been read.

If only because that would mean the other part, the recipient, should support read/receipt as well, and if it did, it must be enabled on that end, which is out of the sender control.

Please check How SMS work here, here or here.

Thank you for the detailed explanation and links. Couldn't understand the technical part of it but got your point. I actually meant to ask about the delivery status of the SMS (its sent from my phone , has it reached the other end or not?); Delivery status of a SMS is a service provided by carrier but cannot figure out to turn it ON in iPhone.

Apologies for not putting my question in a right way earlier.
