Q: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  My Mac Pro is basically unusable.  I am about to go back to a PC.

I am ready to go back to a PC.  I cannot use my computer.  I have lost photos.  Can't even download from carbonite to replace lost itemsk  because of lack of application memory.  It is driving me crazy.  This computer cost too much for this kind of thing to be happening.  Mine has been happening for over a year.  I can't get answers.

Iphoto ios, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), OS X version 10.9.1

    Not running anti virus.

I just ordered memory which will double my memory.  Hope this will help me.  I have 4GB and thius will make it 8GB.  It is an upgrade using two cards that I can install myself.

It was also suggested to upgrade to hard drive to 1 TB.

Also, a 1TB internal hard drive.

I have not purchased the other two yet.  Can you explain the difference between the two and will I lose something important if I do upgrade?

Safari and Carbonite are using a lot of resources.

One of the reasons for Safari could be because you have a lot of tabs opened, and some of them are heavy in using whatever. Solution would be to quit Safari for now, if you want to have your current windows open on the next opening of Safari. Just go to Safari---> Quit. It'll close the window and quit the application.

As for Carbonite, I don't know as I don't have it. You could quit it as well and see what happens.

After you quit the apps, what are the numbers in Activity Monitor again? Are you able to open iPhoto at this point?

Also, you do realize that you are in Mavericks support board with Mt Lion OS on your Mac.

No I did not realize that.  I hate to lose you though.  But I will try and get to correct board.

I will try what you have suggested.  But I have been only running one thing at a time for awhile.  But getting rid of carbonite might help.

Can you check in on my posts on other boards if I find one?

    Osx 10.8.1 on laptop.

You should at least update to 10.8.5.

OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo) 831.81 MB

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1676

MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES

Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.

Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.

"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.8.3 to 10.8.4. If somehow the 10.8.3 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.8.3 and 10.8.4 it will still be stale after the delta update.

Well, I may have to do that but right now nothing will even open.  I will have to wait until I increase my application memory from 4GB to 8.  I hope that solves my problem.

    FYI,

Adding more real RAM may NOT cure the application memory full issue. Users have reported this issue even with 16 or 32 GBs of RAM installed in their systems.

This is not an issue with physically installed RAM, but a problem with the memory buffer and perhaps the memory stack heap, as well.

There is some process that is grabbing all of the available memory. The issue you are having very well could happen with more physical RAM added.

Also, you mentioned MacKeeper which is highly regarded "garbageware".

    How did you "uninstall" this?

There is only one way to get rid of MacKeeper.

Completely uninstall MacKeeper!!! It is crapware!

    http://www.macexpertguide.com/2012/11/16/uninstall-mackeeper-2012-2011-mac/

There is NO other way to uninstall MacKeeper.

IF you didn't use this link before, MacKeeper is still very much installed on your system.

Also, If you have any vestiges of MacKeeper still installed on your system, this could be one of the causes of your Application Memory full error.

Also, something you did initiated the upgrade to OS X Mavericks. Major OS upgrades and updates are NOT initiated, automatically on their own. User activation is required as you need to login to the MacAppStore with your Apple ID initially. Upgrades and updates can't happen without you being logged into Apple's store and even then, you must actually click on the upgrade/update to begin the process.

So no, you had to have begun the download of Mavericks, yourself.

Also, you mentioned adding more RAM.

Do you know where proper Mac RAM is to be purchased?

I'll give you a hint. It is NOT from any old computer retailer off of their shelves.

Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

You keep revealing little tidbits of issues and things that have been happening to your system and things you have done, either recently or in the past.

You are really confusing your issues, now.

At this point, we really need to see a true snapshot of your entire Mac system.

If your Mac is operating, please, PLEASE run the Etrecheck program I alluded to previously, so we can all see exactly what you have installled on your system.

    Good Luck!

The. Turn off Automatic Updates in System Preferences > App

Store As it is you must have it set to Auto Download so that is what it did.

Ahh, but Automatic software installing was introduced in Mavericks. You could download in Mt Lion, but it wouldn't install until you manually allowed it.

Besides, going from Mt Lion to Mavericks isn't an "update" it's considered an "upgrade". Little more evolved than a simple click of the "ok" button.
