Q: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  My Mac Pro is basically unusable.  I am about to go back to a PC.

I am ready to go back to a PC.  I cannot use my computer.  I have lost photos.  Can't even download from carbonite to replace lost itemsk  because of lack of application memory.  It is driving me crazy.  This computer cost too much for this kind of thing to be happening.  Mine has been happening for over a year.  I can't get answers.

Iphoto ios, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), OS X version 10.9.1

The best Time Machine for a MacBook (Pro, Air or other) would be an Apple Time Capsule. Preferable a 4th gen or later.

The 4th gen, part numbers MD032LL/A for the 2TB and MD033/A for the 3 TB, would be the best for the price.

However, the latest would be the ME177LL/A for 2TB and ME182LL/A for the 3TB. These two models uses the same as the above, but adds the latest in wifi technology. Which is just at its infancy. So unless you or any one else is a hard core gamer, video watcher in your house hold. Go with the 4th gen Time Capsule, the MD032 or MD033.

This is so your Macbook will do a back up to the Time Capsule with out having to plug in a external hard drive. It's basically a router, that will replace your current, but has the hard drive built into the router itself.

Set up is for another thread.

Say, how far away is the 8Gb of ram you ordered?

And I imagine the backup and restore time is somewhat lengthy, isn't it?

Not really, the initial upload is lengthy, but it's a background task with little if any adverse effects, but once that is done it's invisible in use. Backup is real-time, triggered by any changes to files. Versions are kept and access is simple. Restores are pretty fast, dependent on download speed of your connection.

It's not a sole backup solution, but for me it's an extra copy of my data files and settings etc, and they are offsite, accessible anywhere.

A couple of days I should have it. why?

That router thing would be a problem if my husbands PC is attached to it.  Right?

    Just wondering about the RAM.

If you have a Time Capsule as a choice on your computer. Then I would imagine that you already have one. Just double check with your husband on what y'all have. If possible, post what model number it is. It would be located on the underside of it.

    Yeah,

Once you confirmed that you had an encrypted, then decrypted hard drive, I knew there was going to be an issue that I wasn't gong to be able to no longer be able to help you with.

DIsconnect this drive and STOP using it.

I never encrypt my external drives for fear if something happens to the drive where the password and encryption could become corrupt and I have NO way to be able to easily recover my data.

I am with Drew Reese on this.

I am really sorry to say that you maybe really screwed, now.

I would do a search for places that deal with computer data recovery and ask questions and get quotes to try and recover your data.

At this point, I think we have done all we can do for you. You need to seek out more Professional data recovery experts to get your photos back.

Unless you are working with secret company or government data, there is no need to encrypt your data.

Now I know why I have never done this, myself.

I do not think any other of our more expert users here will be able to solve your hard drive data issues, but at this point, I am not sure or not.

I hope the best and that you can get this resolved in some other fashion.

    Really Sorry.

    Michel

    FYI,

Other issues with hard drives is that they can fail, with no real warning, at any time.

WIth hard drives failure isn't an "if" proposition, but when.

Another way to keep your digital images and important data safe is to use your CD/DVD optical drive to burn the data to CDs/DVDs every so often.

This is a more permanent backup method ensuring that your most important data is on a more permanent and more indestructible media type.

I am going to chime in on this since everyone keeps advising OS X Time Machine.

I am not a fan, at all, of Apple's Time Machine Application. It has failed me on at least 3 occasions over the years when I really needed it to work.

I would purchase another large capacity external  hard drive(1TB or 2 TB in size)  that uses a separate plug in the wall power supply and use a data cloning app like CarbonCopyCloner or Super Duper that will make an exact AND bootable copy of your Mac's internal hard drive to the external drive.

You can partition the drive to have a bootable OS X and your data on the drive and using the extra patition to use as storage and create another duplicate of your iPhoto library and other image libraries.

I have two 2 TB external drives I do this with.

So, I have four locations on two drives that have duplicates of my important images, work projects and personal data and projects.

Is that something that will work with a laptop?

All Mac backup software will work with laptops, the only thing to consider is that using wifi (to copy to a Time Capsule) will be slower than using a direct ethernet connection or a USB or other disk interface.

Actually Kingston sells 512GB and 1TB flash drives.

I had no idea that a 512GB or 1TB USB flash drive was available, could you provide a link please.

They're available at Amazon. Not exactly svelte or economical but they do exist.

With an extremely high incidence of failure, unfortunately. A non AC powered USB External Drive runs rings around them for reliability and efficiency.

I agree, Time Machine is just one part of a backup strategy. A clone backup is bootable where Time Machine is not. You can do much more with a clone than you can with Time Machine.

When you drive your car you rely on your seat belt and an air bag to protect you. You don't want to rely on just one backup option for your Mac.

You'll most likely find a 2T drive to be only slightly more than the 1T.

I like the Seagate USB 3.0 Backup plus drives. Works on USB 2.0 ports. They come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.

For example: recent prices at Amazon.

Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB USB 3.0 $85.67

Seagate Backup Plus 2 TB USB 3.0 $99.00 currently $79

Seagate Backup Plus 3 TB USB 3.0 $113.95

You are not going to believe this!  I was encrypting my external hardrive and left it to do its thing.

Suddenly I got the old application memory sign and then everything froze.  I had to shut down my whole computer with a forced quit.  I let it sit until 15 minutes ago.

By the way how do you shut down using key command?

Anyway I left the ext. drive in and restarted the computer.  A screen came up showing a screen with the drive and asking for my password.  I gave it.

A second screen came up showing me and asked for that password.  I gave it.

I opened the drive to see if it had finished encryption.  It had.

I opened the drive to see inside and it had copied everything.  So I took the time to open each and every file.  This time they were full of stuff.  And about 5 or 6 sub folders down were the carbonite files I had restored the first time....maybe a year ago.  It contained almost all of my photos!

    Yeah!
