Kernel Panic Help

I've had kernel panics that started out happening every few days, but has recently been as frequest as once or twice a day. I took my computer to the local Apple Store and was told that the problem was bad RAM and they recommended I purchase new RAM, which I did. BUT I'm still getting panics.


I'm kind of bummed that the Geniuses sold me on what was apparently a guess as to what the problem was, especially since their guess cost me a little over $100.


Any help would be greatly appreciated!


What I've done so far:

I recently reformatted and started with a fresh install of OS X when the panics first showed up, but that didn't make any difference. This computer has been bullet proof for years, and there's no new software installed that wasn't installed before the panics. I've tried Safe Mode a bit, and haven't had any panics there, but don't have the time to tinker around in Safe Mode all day, since I have work I need to get done.


How to reproduce/patterns:

I haven't noticed any patterns at all with the panics. Of the three most recent panics, one happened while Chrome was open and Sparrow was active, one happened while Photoshop, Chrome and Sparrow were open and Illustrator was active, and one happened while only Photoshop was open/active.

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and the log shows that your NVIDIA GPU is damaged.

Apple is repairing all MacBooks Pro which have this problem for free if they were purchased less than three years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the Mac to an Apple Store.


If you do not want to pay, what you can do is to always use the integrated GPU through gfxCardStatus, but note that graphic performance will decrease.

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and the log shows that your NVIDIA GPU is damaged.

Apple is repairing all MacBooks Pro which have this problem for free if they were purchased less than three years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the Mac to an Apple Store.


If you do not want to pay, what you can do is to always use the integrated GPU through gfxCardStatus, but note that graphic performance will decrease.

Just got it back from the Genius Bar for the 2nd time and now they said the graphics card is going bad and would need to be replaced.


Since the card is attached to the logic board, I'd need a whole logic board, which would run over $700, OR they gave me the option to have it sent to an Apple certified repair shop where it'd cost $310, so I'm doing that.


They said my mid-2010 MacBook Pro wasn't affected by the bad GPU in that article, and even if it were, I'd purchased it longer than 3 years ago.

I did, but they said their tests DID show the old RAM failed whatever tests they were running so they doubted a discount/refund would "get approved".


I ran memtest on the old RAM and it passed everything fine, so I'm a bit confused.


So I'm not sure how adamately I should pursue a refund, since technically there was apparently some issue with the RAM, although it wasn't related to the problem I took it in to have fixed. And, I did apparently waste money because of a bad diagnosis, like you said.


One other thing, my USB and camera CF card ports had been very finicky (Would often have to wiggle/reinsert USB plugs for a few minutes to get the comptuer to notice them) and I took it into the Genius Bar just before my Apple Care ran out to see if they can fix it. I was told it was a problem with the USB devices/CF cards I own, because they couldn't recreate the issue. Now I've been told that this issue is related to the logic board too, which Apple now says needs to be replaced.
