iOS 7.1 zooms/crops landscape images when screen rotated to landscape mode

In iOS 7.1 the photos.app zooms landscape images to the vertical dimension, cropping the image on left and right, unless the image is in the same relative perspective dimensions as the iPad Air screen, when the device is rotated to landscape mode. When device us rotated to portrait mode, landscape image looks ok (except shrunk).

In past versions of iOS, it would start zoomed, but you could two-finger squeeze to fit entire image on the screen. Now, that gesture shines it all the way down to thumbnail on types election screen.
