Is it possible to back up my MacBook Pro with time machine when it is connected to an imac via FireWire target disc mode? My OS Lion is corrupt and I need to reinstall, but want to back up my data first.

I would not attempt a Time Machine backup that way. Carbon Copy Cloner to an second external hard drive would be better. That way you can extract the exact elements that got corrupted.
