Frequent Kernel Panics! Please Advise.

Hi all — My tower has been a paragon of stability for years, performing beautifully through all kinds of demanding multimedia projects (including multi-projector performance installations). I haven't had the need, desire or time to interrupt my software workflow since 10.6.8, and have performed incremental hardware improvements as I can to create a machine that does what I need done very well.

But just as of this week, kernel panics are occuring frequently, and it's killing me. Somebody, anybody, please parse the report below and advise!

My sincerest thanks in advance, G.

That kind of panic usually results from a failing graphics processor. Yours is overdue for replacement. You might be able to fix it, temporarily, by baking it in an oven to reflow the solder. Search the web for instructions.

It's also possible that one of the many third-party kernel extensions that you installed is causing the problem. Boot in safe mode to test.

Hi Linc, thanks so much for the response. Some follow up questions...

+ How can you tell what kind of panic this is?

+ Is there any visual spotcheck or software test I can perform on the GeForce card to confirm integrity?

+ It would be super helpful if you could highlight the third-paty kernel extensions that you notice. I'm probably carrying many more than I actually need at present from past installs.

Thanks again, G.

I can answer that one:

The panic reason:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0x28fc2e): "TLB invalidation IPI timeout: " "CPU(s) failed to respond to interrupts, unresponsive CPU bitmap: 0x8, NMIPI acks: orig: 0x0, now: 0x0"

Those 8800's have a reputation.
