Can I block my iPhone with IMEI, if the thief reset and activated it with a new simcard?

Hi!

My iPhone got stolen, and I was wondering:

Can I block my iPhone with the IMEI number, IF the thief reset to factory settings, and activated it with a new simcard?
And will my service provider be able to see who the thief is, if he activated it with his simcard?

I called my provider, and they said they couldn't do anything about it, until i called the police.

I just wanted to check in with you guys, before I call the police. I don't want to waste their time, if I can't get my iPhone back.

You need to report the theft to the police, then your carrier in case they can blacklist it. Change all passwords associated with accounts on the iPhone.

If you did not have Find My Phone turned on before the theft there is nothing you can do to the iPhone. With Find My Phone turned on you can send a disable signal.

But can the carrier track down the thief if he activated the "new" iPhone with his SimCard? Can they see who he is?

Given a court order, it's technically possible for them to locate any device connected to their network. Unless the person who has it is wanted for murder, is an international drug lord, has kidnapped a child, or is a terrorist, it's highly unlikely that a court will order the device tracked. Ask the police.

Blacklisting just keeps the iPhone from being used on a cellular network. There are so many stolen in a day they are not likely to try and locate the iPhone unless they know he thief is someone like Tim describes.
