Why won't Numbers merge cells???

I select a row across an entire header and the merge cells option is grayed out. How do I merge cells?

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), Numbers version 3.1

Joshua,

If you will be regularly sharing with Excel, you should stop now, and get excel. Each table you place on a sheet becomes its' own sheet in excel. It will not look correct and you will be sad.

If it is for your job use the tools they require or get everyone to switch.

I like Numbers a lot and still use excel when I know others will be using the file.

I did select the cells. My app will only let me merge the top row of a table if I create a few extra header rows and then delete them when I'm done merging. What a pain.

However, all I was trying to do was create a centered title at the top of the table. I discovered that if you select the table and check the "Table Name" box in the inspector I could accomplish the same thing. Not sure how well this will work when I share with Excel users though.

Yes, that works in Numbers, but it will be not-so-nice in Excel. The Table Name will appear as a Worksheet name on a tab.

Another approach is to type your large description in the middle cell of Row 1, set the text alignment to Centered and turn off "Wrap Text in Cell" in the Text tab of the format pane. If the description is long enough, it will eliminate the cell borders. If it doesn't, you can delete them yourself.
