Can receive but not send email

Hi:

I setup my Apple Mail email accounts a few months ago and they were working fine. One is installed as a POP account, the other IMAP (Gmail). I recently decided to switch to Outlook, so I disabled sending/receiving from Mail. Then I decided I didn't like Outlook and wanted to go back to Mail. After re-enabling Mail, my send function doesn't work anymore. I can receive emails just fine, but not send them - from either the POP or IMAP account.

The message I get when I try to send a message is: Cannot send message using the server sasktel.net. Sending the message content to the server failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox.

The message never sends when I click Try Later and I'm able to send from my Outlook account, so the problem isn't my mail provider's server.

Anyone have a solution?

And go to

https://www.apple.com/support/macosx/mailassistant/

Type in your email and see if Apple has the settings listed.

You can choose the "I want to verify existing settings" option to double check everything matches up. Or open the accounts section on Outlook to see that everything Matches up.

The settings are specific to the account the Service Provider setup. They don't really vary by application. So playing with the settings can stop the account from working. The default and custom ports are setup by the Service Provider not Apple.

Its like trying to get into a locked door without the right key, Its not going to work if the settings dont match what the ESP says you should have.

Connection: I get green lights on everything.

I signed into the webmail service and restarted Mail. Didn't work.

Both accounts are using the appropriate service provider. "Use only this server" option is checked.

I tried the mail setup assistant and all my options are matching.

I also removed and re-added my sasktel account, but it's still not working.

At this point your best option would be to contact Sasktel. It's possible the settings from the Apple website are off.

The green lights mean everything is go on the Mail App but the server is still not letting it send.

Have you tried sending a blank message to yourself?

Problems with the address or an attachment could also cause an error on the server.

Could you send email from the webmail service?

If you still arent able to send mail but you can on the webmail, try using a test user on your Computer.

Go to Sys Prefs and click Users and Groups.

Unlock the padlock in the bottom left hand corner,

Click the plus sign above it.

Build a new user account and make it an admin.

Sign out of your user and into that one.

You only need to add the Email account in Mail, nothing else.

Is it able to send?

If yes then there is a problem with your user library, will need to delete a few targeted files there.

If no, only other option is trying the same settings on another WiFi network to see if theres a difference.

But Green means go, so if it still doesnt work, I'd call Sasktel.

Thanks for your help! Unfortunately it's still not working.

I've tried to send multiple emails to myself and it sends, but I never receive the message in my inbox or on my webmail service. When I send blank messages to other email accounts, I get the error message.

I tried creating a new user account and setting up mail in that, but it still wouldn't send.

I'll call Sasktel and post a response if they were able to solve my issue.

Issue wasn't resolved by SaskTel - they said if I'm able to send fine through webmail, then I should be able to send through Mail. I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple yesterday (they were very patient and helpful) but they said because my Gmail works in the app (I removed it and added it back, now it works; the same doesn't happen with my SaskTel account), it's Sasktel's problem.

Is there a way to see if I can setup my SaskTel account as IMAP instead of POP on Mail? The email setup wizard doesn't let me specify and defaults to POP.

Should I try uninstalling the app? Or is there a config file that is saving my SaskTel settings?

The problem is the only way to reinstall the Mail Application is reinstalling the OS.

If you can send fine from the webmail then the Mac Mail App should work unless Sasktel is blocking the mail client. Settings may need to be configured on their end to access it properly.

Whether or not the Sasktel account supports IMAP is up to them. If their servers don't support it, it wont work.

If you call Sasktel go to this link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1277?viewlocale=en_US

About half way down the page is a list of settings, confirm all the information with them.

If the issue is happening in a different user account, try safebooting the machine holding the Shift key on startup until you see a progress bar.

I'm surprised it didnt work in a different user account though.

Worst case scenario, call AppleCare again and ask to speak to a Senior Advisor in the Mail department since both Apple and the ESP are telling you its the other guy.

I had this problem after I changed email passwords. I signed onto my email provider and changed the password, and I changed the password on Mail under accounts. I was able to receive messages fine, using the new password, but Send failed. I finally found something in the keychain entitled smtp.<provider>. This entry had the old password. Updating the password here fixed my problem.

I do not know why I have that "smtp" entry in my keychain, or why Mail didn't update it when I updated the password in its software client.
