Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

You have enough Ram and enough Diskspace.

Begin with following:

In Finder choose the GO menupoint, choose 'Go To Folder', type in /Library/StartupItems/

That folder opens and in there delete ProTec6b

also delete HP IO

and delete DigidesignLoader

This does not uninstall anything but just makes these not starting (and running always) after startup.

Restart your mac, empty the Trash.

Apr 4, 2014 2:03 PM in response to Linc Davis

I am not the OP, but I've been experiencing what I think is the same problem, and it is truly maddening. I have a similar vintage MBP but with a quad-core i7 and 16GB RAM.

Linc, I did what you suggested and took Chrome out of the equation and restarted, but I see no discernible difference, so I think the Chrome console error messages are a red herring.

Here are things I've noticed that may be germane:

1) Not all operations on my Mac slow to a crawl. In fact, it appears to be limited to actions that require making an IP connection. Actions/apps that do not require internet access are unaffected until they do need to make a network connection.

2) It looks and feels as if there are 2 problems: making internet connections, and rendering once a connection is made. All apps are slow connecting. Both Chrome and Safari are also slow rendering or, more likely, hanging for a while before starting rendering. But I don't think actual data transfer once a connection is made is affected at all.

For example, if I run a speed test at speedtest.net, it takes forever to start running the individual tests (true on both Chrome and Safari). When it said it was testing upload speed, it sat there for almost a full minute before the speedometer needle and stats budged off 0. But once the tests begin to run, they complete in the usual amount of time, and my upload (and download) speeds were exactly as expected. So the data transfer itself seems OK; it's making the connection that is so very slow.

In Chrome I can watch browser progress in realtime because it is so slow. I can easily and leisurely read statuses like "waiting", "establishing secure connection", "resolving host", "connecting" etc. Often multi-second delays in between these statuses. Then, once that activity stops and it is [apparently] time to render the page, the browser appears to stall for a while, then the actual rendering is snappy and not slow. This also seems to be true in Safari (although it hides a lot of the statuses mentioned above).

3) Linc, I tried clearing the Console display (in All Messages), then reloading a browser page in Safari. It was slow slow slow, but generated no messages in Console. When I try the same thing in Chrome, I get only a few of the "Google Chrome Helper: Process unable to create connection because the sandbox denied the right to lookup com.apple.coreservices.launchservicesd and so this process cannot talk to launchservicesd." messages.

To give you an idea of how bad this is, my powerful MBP now takes 30-45 seconds to load nytimes.com home page in Chrome or Safari. Chrome is a bit faster than Safari but I have ad blocking turned on in Chrome, so that is to be expected. I asked my wife, sitting on the same home network, to load nytimes.com on her anemic little Chromebook, and it loaded in 3 seconds.

My problems dated from right around when I upgraded to OS X 10.9.2. Is there any way I can go back to 10.9.1 and see if that "fixes" the problem? I don't know how to do that. Thanks for any advice.
