Using an iPod shuffle 6th gen as a smartwatch

So I'm looking into smart watches and I started thinking, instead of buying a $250 smartwatch can I just buy a $50 shuffle and use it like a smartwatch? So that's why I'm here, can't i? Is there any way I can hook my iPhone 5s up to my shuffle and get different alerts?

Also, if I use it purely as a watch, how long will battery life be? Like I put brightness on medium, no wifi or no music downloaded (or like 50 songs downloaded) shouldn't that give it like a 2 day battery life? Also, what's the highest iOS the shuffle runs?

The iPod Shuffle does not have a screen so it won't work as a watch at all.

The 6th Generation iPod Nano uses Pixo as the OS, not any version of iOS and cannot communicate with your iPhone. There is no WiFi on an iPod Nano. They do make watchbands to hold the iPod Nano 6th Generation. The screen will stay on for about 30 seconds when you push the button to get the time so you should easily get 2 days battery life depending on how often you check the time.
