Until it is fully charged. Depending on the current level of charge that might be a few minutes to over an hour). If the battery shows a substantial charge, it really isn't necessary to charge it before use.
There is no memory effect and also you cannot overcharge iPhone.
So charge whenever you want and as long as you want even with 100% charge.
Only thing is do not deplete your battery completely.
As its a new iPhone and the battery might not have been charged for quiet some time now , Make sure to let the battery drain completely and once the iPhone is completely off.
Connect to the charger and charge it till it becomes 100% and leave it connected for another 45 minutes after it reaches 100%.
Do not overcharge your iPhone always , its just for the first time.
Depleting the iPhone battery completely and charging it at once to 100% is called us battery calibration , Which should be done every couple of weeks like 5-6 weeks to maintain the battery health.
I do not want to offend the other guys response but this is what will make your iPhone perform better in terms of battery life. Just go thru the link on Apple Website mentioned below.

And even that, if it happens occassionally, is not a cause for concern. If it happens once every month or so, it's not a big deal. Just don't let it happen constantly.

What nonsense, you cannot overcharge an iPhone and you shouldn't drain your battery completely.

Intentionally drain it? No, not unless there's a specific issue related to the battery you're trying to troublehsoot.
caeser_tech's procedure is pointless, I agree. But the occassional full discharge, as long as it's not a regular thing, isn't a problem.
And nothing at [https://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html] (which is the correct link, not whatever ct had in his post, doesn't say the same thing ct said.
Hi Ckuan,
This is just a reply and trust me the place I am at right now.. Its now by knowledge but by experience.
I just got into this support forum only because I wanted to help.
You're not helping. You're providing inaccurate information. You didn't even post a valid link.
Nothing in the manual or in the Apple support website corresponds with your advice about intentionally letting the device discharge, and then 'overcharging' it the first time.
I might be wrong guys , But this has helped many, trust me on this.

The information you are providing is dated (in some of it was never accurate in the first place). If you wish to help, make sure the information your give is accurate.

Sorry, but no, I won't 'trust you on this'. It is not a recommended procedure by Apple. Additionally, the battery technology doesn't need this 'priming' that you are referring to.
Lithium-ion batteries do not need to have an initial 'priming charge'.
Perhaps you should learn How Stuff Works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/everyday-tech/lithium-ion-battery.htm
I still stand with discharge completely is not good for the iPhone battery as in my post.
Yes you can use till it switches itself off (note there's still a charge in the battery) and fully charge it again for example to calibrate the battery indicator.

Ah, okay, we were using the same terminology for slightly different things. My apologies. Yes, I agree that a full and total discharge is not good, but if the devices powers down due to a very low battery (what most people think of as a 'discharge'), and then you plug it in to charge back up, that's okay.
My error.
No worries, agreed totally.
