This means that Final Cut cannot communicate with your camcorder or deck.

It usually happens due to a bad cable or connector, no camera/deck connected, or one that is turned off.  It can also happen if your camcorder/deck is connected via FireWire and you have additional FireWire devices connected to your Mac at the same time.  Less frequently it may indicate a problem with the camcorder or deck.

More info from you will help ...

    • What make & model camera or deck are you using?  How is it connected to your Mac?
    • What model Mac are you using?  ... and are you really using OS X 10.5.8 as your profile indicates
    • What version of Final Cut Express are you using?   What Easy Setup are you using in FCE?
    • Assuming you have a miniDV camcorder connected to your Mac via FireWire, is your camcorder the *ONLY* FireWire device connected to your Mac?
