Connection to printer lost.

For some years I have printed from my MBP (OSX 10.7.5) to my Canon MP620 via wireless connection to my iMac (OSX 10.7.5) which is connected by USB to the printer.

Recently the yellow ink ran out when printing from MBP and the printing stopped. I have replaced the ink and all ink levels are fine. Printing direct from the iMac is fine. But I can no longer print from the MBP. I get either:

"Cannot connect to printer" or

"Support code 300: Printer does not respond. ..."

The Ink Supply Level was still showing Yellow as empty. Now it says "Information Not Available".

I have shut down and re-started the MBP and the iMac. I have tried deleting and re-installing the printer and also resetting all printers, to no effect. However, if I connect the MBP directly to the printer via USB cable, it prints fine and shows the correct ink supply levels.

What should I do next?

Hello winvestor,

It sounds like you are not able to print to your Canon MP620 from your MacBook Pro. You have taken some really great troubleshooting steps already. I found an article with a few additional steps you can take (you can skip the steps you have already taken):

Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:

  1. Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
  2. Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
  3. Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
  4. Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
  5. Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
  1. Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
  2. If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again. Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
  3. Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.

Additional Information

Note: If your printer is wireless-capable, you should first add the printer to your network. Use the printer's control panel, or temporarily connect the printer to your Mac via USB. For more details, see this article.

Hi Sheila M,

Thank you. Despite the fact that I had done them before, I have again tried the things in the above articles up to, but not including downloading the printer software again. The reason that I don't want want to delete and download the printer software is that it is working fine from my iMac and also from my MBP IF I connect it by USB cable.

I'm sure the problem must be to do with the MBP and its wireless connection with my iMac for the printer routing. However, the wireless connection between the two computers works fine for other things eg file-sharing.

So I am afraid that I am no further forward.
