Q: Error: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."

Hey guys, I keep getting this error when I try to empty the trash. There's a folder that I haven't been able to delete for few months now. How can I empty the trash?

Please help me.

Do it under normal circumstances. Logged into your account. I just ran it. Here is a screenshot:

Okay I right-clicked the folder I can't delete and got this info:

    "Where: /Volumes/NO NAME/.Trashes/501"

    And this:

    "Disk image: /private/var/folders/x7/l2xnxl3164v9xvlk8f__296w0000gn/T/.truecrypt_aux_mnt1/vo lume.dmg"

Is this the information you wanted?

You have a TrueCrypt volume mounted. Unmount it. You also seem to be showing hidden files in the Finder. If you know how you did that, undo it.

The computer-illiterate shell command would not work even if you ran it and didn't delete all your files, perhaps including all backups.

Thanks, but I've already unmounted the Truecrypt container and I still get the same error.

I've mounted the Truecrypt container and I still get the error...

Is there a way I can just delete whatever is in the trash without harming my backups?

Can I run an OSX equivalent to 'safe mode'?

Again, passive insults and criticism without any "computer-literate" reasoning and constructive dialogue. I'll leave it to you as you will solve the OP's question regardless. Cheers, Linc.

    Thanks for your reply.

What's another way I can 'force delete' the files in the Trash Folder?

Can I delete files in 'Recovery Mode?'

Please help me as I'm unable to delete anything right now since I can't empty the Trash.

You may find Apple's You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash article helpful.

Also note that among the other Apple articles it links to are several archived ones, like Archived - Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X, which mentions several forms of the "rm -rf" command & the warnings about using them correctly.

Thanks! I'm looking at this now: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1526

Can anyone recommend me another solution? Is there a way I can boot into 'Recovery Mode' and empty the trash?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

Alright, I just tried emptying the trash via the Finder where I pressed Ctrl and then 'Finder' and it just finished deleting all the files.

    Everything looks good so far.
