I have a G5 and iBook with PowerPC/iTunes 10....just recently I can't bring up the preset Internet radio on either one. Is this a glitch, or have they been permanently disabled for older versions of iTunes?

There is a difference between iTunes Radio - the new service from Apple - and the internet radio stations that can be streamed from iTunes. The internet streaming feature has been in iTunes forever.

I am experincing the same issue as you on my older iMac Intel running 10.4.11 at work. this feature has worked fine forever and as of the last two days I am seeing this.User uploaded file

Yeah Demo, I'm getting the same error message. Looks like PowerPC users are starting to get left out in the cold more and more. I do have a Intel/MacBook, although it's not hooked up to my surround-sound because I take it on location all the time. Eventually I'm getting an Intel/MacPro a bit down the line, mainly for video production, and will still use my PowerPC for whatever I can........thanks for relaying the info, and good luck to ya.

I should have posted this for you a while ago. My apologies for not doing it sooner. This was passed on to me by another user R C-R

He deserves the credit for this workaround. This is his post from an area in the forum where you have to be level 6 or higher in which to participate.

I am getting the same (global) error using iTunes 10.3.1 on a 2008 MacBook running 10.6.8. 😟

A really, really awkward workaround that works for me (for now) is if you have the URL of the Internet radio server you can go to Advanced > Open Stream... (in iTunes 10.x) or type command + U, enter it there & click OK. The station should play fine in 10.x.

You can get the URL from any version of iTunes that still supports the "radio tuning service" (which I gather is an Apple server thing Apple is no longer supporting for 10.x). Play the station normally from the newer version & type command + I to open the info window. At the bottom of the "Summary" tab you will see the URL. (Annoyingly, you can't copy the text so you will have to write it down.)

Once you have that, you can play the station in 10.x & add it to a playlist for future use.

To check this out, maybe try http://198.27.80.37/stream/mbarsott.pls -- it is a European Jazz station that works fine for me with iTunes 10.3.1.

This workaround does work, but is a bit cumbersome. I'm still holding out hope that it is just a glitch.

No need to apologize there Demo, anyway I was aware of the mpeg streams that some stations offered, and they play fine. But I definitely appreciate you reminding me. As a matter of fact I used to add stations to my old iTunes before they even had the Internet radio option, that was back in my OS9 years. Although there's one NPR station I listen to regularly that doesn't offer their mpeg stream anymore since they're on Internet radio now. But I only have it in my iBook, and have to figure out if I can export it to my G5. Internet Radio has hundreds of stations, as you know, to choose from, and I like the variety and options. Oh well, the only constant in life is change, especially in the computer world), so we have to deal with it....but still hoping it's just a glitch as well.

It seems to have been disabled for all iTunes users using below iTunes 11..

It's been happening to me as well, same error message. Stopped working on March 26, 2014. I've had MacBook Pro's for many years, using iTunes radio streaming for just as long, running OS 10.6.8. Long story, but I refuse to upgrade to iTunes 11. I'm going to try Demo's workaround (thanks!), and limp through this way for awhile.

Meanwhile, I've just entered " (Mac or PC) alternatives to itunes " into the search bar, and have begun sorting through the options. Yes, I do see that many of them don't have full integration with Apple devices, and many don't have radio streaming. I'll post again if I find any good alternatives that work well.

Sorry to hear you're having the same trouble Cea, it might be that's the case. I thought something was happening a couple of weeks ago, as I use my iBook/iTunes as an alarm as well, and it wasn't playing the jazz station I had selected and playing some rock station instead. But I was still able to select the Internet Radio stations until around the date you had mentioned. I think ya have to have OS 10.7+ to install iTunes 11 anyway, and for the time being I set up my MacBook Pro to be my alarm now. Personally, I'll stick with iTunes, as it appears to offer many more features than any othe media program (I'm surprised it doesn't have TV yet). The process Demo mentioned is one in which you go to each radio station's website, there's normally a selection that might say "listen now,"or "listen live," etc. and just select the one for iTunes (mpeg). It should upload and start right away, and will be in the catagory "Internet Songs" on the side menu......have fun.

Oh, by the way, I figured out I can transfer the radio streams from on computer to another through Home Sharing. Didn't know that could be done, only thought mpeg songs could be transfered. But now I have another problem, Home Sharing only allows sharing up to 5 computers to be used, and mine shows I'm using four already. Probably two are my OLD G3 and G4 that aren't working properly......does anyone know how I can de-authorize them, thanks? Probably have to post another question on this one.

Mar 29, 2014 11:34 AM in response to Markojay

If you no longer have the computers, you have to deauthorize all computers and the authorize the ones that you want to use again. You can have up 5 computers authorized and you only have 4, so it seems like you are OK now, but it's pretty simple to do.

The instructions are in this kb article.

iTunes Store: Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC

You can deauthorize all computers once each year, so if you do it, you can't deauthorize all for another year. You can still do one at a time, but not all at once again for another year.
