ipod doesn't display the music on my computer

i have connected my ipod classic to my computer and it will show the songs in itunes but i look on my computer and open the music file for the ipod and it says the file is empty when Itunes says there is over 2500 songs installed on the Ipod. I want to pull the music off the Ipod and store it on an external drive or just be able to put in on Itunes so i'll have it and then do a sync with everything that i want on the Ipod so i can have the music i dont physically own in both places.

iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod. You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store. However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links. (The CNET article seems to be popular.)

Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your iTunes library. And then, sync the iPod to that library as desired.
