Q: Messages Menu Commands Greyed Out

My System is OSX 10.9.2 - Mesages 8.0 (4662) Nearly all Menu Commands are greyed out, including Preferences>General>Buddy List>Account Status, and Buddies>Show in Buddy List, plus Buddies>Invyt to Video Chat>Share my Screen etc, etc. I have updated my Apple Account, signed out, and signed back in, initially entered my iCloud Account, which is the same details as my Apple Account, and nuked the Library>Preferences>com.apple.iChat.plist, all to no avail, so where am I going wrong. I really need to utilise the Screen Share facilities with a friend in Australia, a new switcher to Mac, and this is becoming extremely frustrating.

Thanks so much for posting the solution to this. It was driving me crazy. The Apple Gothic font did the trick for me. In my case I use Font-Explorer Pro and it had disabled it. Whew! Thanks again.

I realise that this is an old post, but many thanks to the reply about system fonts. It was certainly the fix for me.

OMG who would have thought it was a simple APPLE FONT problem. Thank you for the genius who discovered it. Go into font book an turn it on if its off. If its missing load it. This is almost as bad as missing DLL files on a PC - oh yeah I said it!

Ralph, thanks for the information about the fonts. I found that Apple Gothic was turned off in Font Book. It was a simple matter of turning it back on and everything then worked.
