Are you running the current iPhoto version (9.5.1 on OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks)?
If so, open iPhoto on your Mac. Go to iPhoto > Preferences from iPhoto's menu. Choose the "General" tab. Then select Connecting Camera Opens ... iPhoto.
"Connecting Camera Opens" is selected. I have iPhoto '11 version 9.2.3 (629.52). When I checked for an upgrade, I am told that my software is up to date.
This means you are running a (very) old version of OS X. When you are told your software is up to date, it means you are running the most current version your operating system can support.
So does this mean I have to upgrade my system (currently OSx 10.6.8) in order to connect with the iPhone upgrade? (Thank you for your fast response.)
I checked the App Store and learned that iPhoto 9.5.1 (current version) does require Mavericks (OS X 10.9).
OS X 10.6.8, your version, is the earliest version of OS X that runs the current iTunes (11.1.5). So you can at least communicate to your iPhone using iTunes. But my guess is that yes, you would have to upgrade your OS X version to have an iPhoto version capable of communicating with your iPhone.
That's actually too bad, since iOs 7 worked perfectly fine with my iPhone! Many thanks for your input. 😐
Glad to help. I think you'll be glad if and when you upgrade your Mac's software as well.
Enjoy your Apple gear.
