Why do you ask? Are you experiencing a problem. I just saw another thread where someone recommended Onyx. I downloaded it to try it out but I would never recommend it. The first thing it does is ask for blanket administrator rights to your machine. It is not signed with an Apple Developer ID. If you use that software you give the developer full control over your machine and all of your data.

If he is referring to the OnyX application, there are a double-dozen "system utility" apps of that sort available. They are all more or less interchangeable. I keep a copy of Yasu around for cleaning out caches and such - it doesn't ask for administrative privileges unless it needs to, which is more civilized - but it really makes no difference.

System utility apps are never necessary but occasionally useful. They are little more than front end GUIs for unix utilities covering a range of low-level system maintenance tasks. You can do anything they do by opening terminal and referencing a few man pages. OS X will take care of all of these tasks on its own, so running the utilities is generally superfluous. Every once in a while (particularly if you're a developer) it makes sense to clear logs or caches or reset this or that by hand, but there's no sense in doing it unless you have a particular goal in mind. The last time I used Yasu was two or three (or four) years ago when I had some funky font issues; clearing the font cache got rid of a corrupt font and put things back right. I haven't used it or needed it since.
