Macbook 2008 Logic Board Failure

I have a 2008 Macbook, and it's always been fine. Lately it is having kernel panics (like every 5 minutes) or garbled screens where the black lines appear in columns. A couple of people suggested I take it to the Apple Store because this is a known logic board issue, and they got theirs replaced for free out of warranty, but I also saw something that said that was only due to a lawsuit, and that extension period ended in 2012. Has anyone else had this issue replaced since then? Thanks!
