does reminders populate events in calendar

I want to create a reminder that will pop up in calendar and vice versa. It is redundant to have to create an event in the caledars app and then going to reminders to create another reminder to remind me of it. Is there a work around or am I not grasping the concept of reminders/calendars. I need help in trying to organize my schedule. Thanks for all the help!!
