How do you make Spanish Accent Marks?

I use Mavericks 10.9.2. What is the procedure to make Spanish accent marks?😕

As Tony points out, holding the key will pop up a list of possible accents. However, for a few, this doesn't seem to work. Also, if you need to type more than the occasional accented letter, there are other methods.


You can also use the method that has worked for the entire existence of OS X. Certain keys on the keyboard can be used to create accents by pressing those keys in conjunction with Option. On a US keyboard, Option+e produces ´. After typing that, the accent will be highlighted in yellow. Now type the character you want to accent, such as a.


If you turn on the Keyboard Viewer, you can see which keys have the special feature by holding down the Option key. The special keys will turn Orange and show the accent they produce.

On the US keyboard, they are: `,e,u,i,n producing `,´,¨,ˆ,˜


In summary, to produce à, press Opt+`, then a.


If you are using a keyboard layout for a specific language that uses accents, like Spanish, then the accented letters are normally simpler to produce.

Notice on the Spanish keyboar layout the ´&`keys don't require the Option key. You can just type them, then the letter to modify.
