external harddisk in itunes

I want to shift my media from computer c: to an external harddisk because my music is too much for my c: disk space. I am using an Iphone 5 and an ipod classic 160. I want to make use of this itunes harddisk with my iphone and my ipod. I tried but it does not work.

How to do?
