Then test to see if it solved the problem.

The original support article - which started this thread, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5887 states that it was last updated Feb 19th, 2014.
The iPad Air was Released, November 1, 2013.
This document states that to share via AirDrop you need iOS 7 and a variety of devices. The Air is not listed among them. Additionally, about as many iOS 7.x devcies support AirDrop as don't.
For the record the Air does support AirDrop.
