I am using the latest Quicktime (v7.7.5) on a new install of Windows 8.1 and .mov files will play but only the audio works - there is no video. Clearly There is a video codec missing. Can someone at apple tell me what I need so quicktime (and other applications) can play .mov videos on Windows 8.1?

Is could possibly be in DivX? Which Quicktime for Mac supports, but QT for Windows does not support. And that is exactly what I've seen with DivX, you'll get the audio without the video. So you need to find out what codec is being used.
I thought of this and installed DivX and I had the same problem. This really is rediculous - is there some reason the install for Quicktime doens't simple check for proper codecs and install as necessary? Hopefully someone from Apple development can respond.
Final Cut has many codecs that can't run on a Windows version of QuickTime. Even a modern Mac can't play some of them with also installing Final Cut.
iMovie exports are usually always H.264 video and AAC audio. QuickTime Player for Windows will play them.
If the video opens in QuickTime Player for Windows use the Movie Inspector window to find out the codecs.
Hey Kirk, thank you for your reply. All my windows media players (Windows, Quicktime, Pinnacle Sudio, etc..all only play the audio and not the video. The quicktime player on Windows recogizes a problem and suggests that I goto this website (www.apple.com/quicktime/rescources/components......) and download missing somftware (but gives no indication of what is missing :-)).
So the Windows Quicktime Player shows that the .mov file is made with the Apple Intermediate Codec, 1308 x 736, Millions 16 bit Integer (little Indidan), Sterdo(LR), 48kHz. I also looked at the inspector in the Mac.
This is clearly the issue. I suppose I can always use my Mac to convert files to something more compatible with windows and then move these files. I just find it hard to believe that Apple does not have a windows 8.x version of this codec.
There's your trouble. AIC is what a Mac would use to convert a previously non editable video (like MPEG-2) into something that could then me edited.
Your file also uses "raw" audio that is 10 MB's a minute in size.
Export again from Final Cut and use H.264 and AAC and the file will be ten times smaller in size and work almost anywhere.
Even if Apple development did respond, whoever they are. They'd be saying the same thing. You need to find out what codec is being used? Or is it a secret?
If it is a secret, it is Apples secret. Most folks that try to play a movie dont even know what a codec is. All my .mov files were made on the Mac with Final Cut Pro or iMovie. No secrets here...
