How long does it take to download Maverick? The icon says it's downloading, but I don't see a progress bar.

Start to finish, I downloaded and installed it in 1 hour 45 minutes.
Depends on your internet speed.
Go to Ookla Speed Test and tell me your "Download speed".
You may also just have got a frozen download.
Restart (force restart if you need to) and try again.

This helped me -- I think I've been downloading for over an hour now. However, without a progress bar, it's impossible to know what's happening.
Is the download showing in LaunchPad with a progress bar?
Pete
Very helpful, but I don't want to try this until another hour has passed, as I'm afraid Maverick is
downloading and I might lose the hour or more I've already spent.
I don't know Launchpad. I just know it's really stupid for Apple not to give guidance -- or a progress bar -- on a download. I'm going for a bike ride. If not downloaded when I get back, I'm tossing it.
LaunchPad is in the Dock (Bottom ), usually near the finder on the left. It shows your Applications. It will show the download and if it is active.

Josh - Just did Ookla Speed test: 154 mbps, but I don't know what a slow speed or fast speed is. A few hours ago, I tried to take the MacApp icon out of menu bar and put it on my desktop, but it disappeared and the download (if it was even happening) stopped. I read on here that an ethernet connection is three times faster than wireless, so I'm going to try that. Thanks for your help.
Peter - I searched for LaunchPad in the magnifying glass, but I don't have it. Thanks for your help.

Are you running Snow Leopard at present? That would explain why you don't have it. You didn't mention which OSX you are updating from.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate all the help, because I'm so lost. But I have never seen the LaunchPad icon. If I have it, it should appear when I type in 'LaunchPad' in the spotlight magnifying glass, right? But it doesn't.
I forgot which OS X version introduced Launchpad.
My guess is Lion OS X 10.7.
I don't think you told us which version you are running.
I have 10.6.8 OS, so you are right -- LaunchPad was added with a later OS.
That becomes irrelevant now then. You did know that some of your software may no longer run when you install Mavericks? You can check here.
Also you will need a minimum of 4GB RAM to get a reasonable response from Mavericks. The more the better. Here are the recommended specs for Mavericks.
