Mar 28, 2014 3:42 PM in response to Mike92234by mrbear235,★HelpfulDepends on your internet speed.
Go to Ookla Speed Test and tell me your "Download speed".
You may also just have got a frozen download.
Restart (force restart if you need to) and try again.

Mar 28, 2014 3:54 PM in response to C F McBlobby Mike92234,This helped me -- I think I've been downloading for over an hour now. However, without a progress bar, it's impossible to know what's happening.

Mar 28, 2014 3:56 PM in response to mrbear235by Mike92234,Very helpful, but I don't want to try this until another hour has passed, as I'm afraid Maverick is
downloading and I might lose the hour or more I've already spent.

Mar 28, 2014 3:58 PM in response to petermac87by Mike92234,I don't know Launchpad. I just know it's really stupid for Apple not to give guidance -- or a progress bar -- on a download. I'm going for a bike ride. If not downloaded when I get back, I'm tossing it.

Mar 28, 2014 10:22 PM in response to mrbear235by Mike92234,Josh - Just did Ookla Speed test: 154 mbps, but I don't know what a slow speed or fast speed is. A few hours ago, I tried to take the MacApp icon out of menu bar and put it on my desktop, but it disappeared and the download (if it was even happening) stopped. I read on here that an ethernet connection is three times faster than wireless, so I'm going to try that. Thanks for your help.

Are you running Snow Leopard at present? That would explain why you don't have it. You didn't mention which OSX you are updating from.

Mar 28, 2014 11:12 PM in response to sbermanby Mike92234,Thank you so much. I really appreciate all the help, because I'm so lost. But I have never seen the LaunchPad icon. If I have it, it should appear when I type in 'LaunchPad' in the spotlight magnifying glass, right? But it doesn't.

Mar 28, 2014 11:28 PM in response to Mike92234by sberman,I forgot which OS X version introduced Launchpad.
My guess is Lion OS X 10.7.
I don't think you told us which version you are running.
