I have a iPod Classic 80GB. I want to take all my purchased iTunes music and put it on my iPod. Do I have to download it first? I don't know if I have enough room/memory to download the entire library on my laptop

You would need to download your purchased content to your iTunes library and then sync what you want to your iPod. A common practice when media libraries get too big for the main computer is to move them to a dedicated external drive. I'll include some information for you below:
