Did you turn on messages is settings and use your email for send and receive?
What about the iPhone user? An I phone can use its phone number and/or email to send and receive.

Any particular iPhone or all iPhones?
As far as I know, the other user must still need to register to use Messages on their phone because the iPad cannot send SMS messages. So even though the iPhone can receive SMS Mesaages, the phone must still be set up to receive iMessages since Messages is an Apple app that works with iOS devices and both devices need to be set up and registered to use the app.

Glad it's fixed!
Hit the "easy" button for me!
FFor some reason my iPod touch will let me send to some iPhones & not to others. Also the iPod doesn't have the settings that show in the Apple tutorial. My iPod is new.
You may have the same issue as the first person did, i.e. they may not have iMessage activated.
I don't know which settings you are referring to or which tutorial.
Basically, my iPod Touch does not have a place for me to do anything about putting in phone numbers.
The "tutorial" is the Apple 'how to' message that addresses this. It's on the Apple.com website.
I think the problem may be the iPhone user I'm trying to text has not activated her iMessage capability.
I'll ask her.
Thanks.
How about posting the actual link to that tutorial?
You can only message to people that are using iMessage.
