Seagate Back Up Plus not recognized

(Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

When I started up the computer it wouldn't boot up all the way and the screen froze with a gray background and the apple in the the middle. I was able to "Safe Boot" it holding the shift key and the computer finally booted up. There was an issue with the cursor, however, because it now has these dotted lines that resemble a vertical bar code underneath it. The machine is also running really slow.

Now here's my real problem, I just bought a Seagate Back Up Plus 3TB to back up all my files before I intend to turn the computer in for repair, plugged it in and no icon or anything showed up for devices. It only shows up in Disk Utility, but all the options (ie. Verify Disk Permissions, Verify Disk etc.) are grayed out. I want to get ALL of my files backed up so I can send my computer in for repairs but I'm running out of understanding for this. Any help in getting my iMac to recognize and use the hard drive would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, for one thing you will need to format the external drive as it shows with a Master Boot Record Partition Map and you need GUID instead; also it should be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So hit the Partition tab and do that.

As for showing it on the desktop, do you have your Finder Preferences set to show externals on the desktop?

As you can see, mine has 5 partitions (obviously you don't need to do that); you can choose any number starting at 1......
