I need help setting up my old Roland a90 with MainStage 3.

I have bought a generic usb to 2 MIDI plug cord (midi in and midi out), but I can't get it to work at all, is it something on the a90? or something in MainStage? or i have got the wrong gear?

MainStage, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
