voicemail lost after upgrade

A friend of mine had some voicemails from her deceased husband on for iPhone. When she recently updated the iOS The voicemails disappear. Both the Apple store and the Verizon store say they can't help her. Does anyone know any way of recovering these voicemails? It means a lot to her.
