No. iPads cannot backup directly to a hard drive unless it's a wireless connected drive. However, everything you sync to iTunes and to iPhoto can be backed up when you backup your computer's hard drive.

Thank you. I just really dislike icloud because before I figured it out, (still haven't) it downloaded stuff that I would never have even used after a couple of weeks and now it sits there, unused and not needed EVER, and I can't use it for anything else that I actually want to store. I don't even want to see that cloud on my computer because it's useless.

Thank you very much for your help. I just wanted to save photos on icloud and it has saved books I'll never read again. I teach school and have 3 iPads there that are in my name, although they belong to the school and so all student apps that I get have saved to my iCloud and just fill up more space.
