Q: Why did Parallels & Windows 7 disappear after update?

Since the latest update my Parallels and Windows 7 has disappeared. Is there a way to recover them? They were installed when I purchased the computer, upon my request, so I don't have the cd's.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

What system did you update from and how did you install the update?

It was an automatic update. My computer was set to automticaly look for Apple updates and perform them. It was a system update I believe.

And you have a current system backup from before that update was made?

Look in the Application folder, Parallels will probably be there. Most updates unless they change from one version of OS X to a later version do not stop installed software from working.

Note you need to set up a backup routine yourself, either by a Apple Time Capsule or an external disk drive and use Time Machine. There are other ways of doing backups but at least one of those will get you in to safer position.

From the information you have given it does not appear that you have a backup of your computer.

I'm thinking I don't. I checked the folders and they are empty. Is there a chance that these programs were not new that were installed and with the update/upgrade (not sure on that one) that is realized this and wiped them out. I don'e see those items on my itemized invoice. If so, then I need to know where instructions are to install Windows because I need info off my Publisher files. I do have most od them backedup from my previous computer.

Are you able to contact the company that provided the Mac and set it up for you, if you are it may save a lot of time and frustration for you.

However if that is not an option we need to know what update the system performed was. Look in the App Store under the Updates menu, it gives "updates installed during the last 30 days".

I am presuming you accessed Win 7 through Parrallels.

Use Spotlight to search for Parrallels, that may show where it as hidden itself.

The more info you can provide ( don't show any personal info though) may allow somne one on the forum to get you working again.

I've tried reaching the guy that set up my comouter but he appears to have swithced jobs.

I can't find Spotlight. Under the updates it only shows my HP printer update. I think it may have been a system update. My computer has new icons of programs. I'm not sure what most of any on here are anyways. It's been a few years since I've used a Mac and they sure have changed.

I can find Parallels and Windows 7 folders but they are empty. I did access Win 7 through Parallels. Used to I could click on the Windows folders and when I went to open something it triggered Parallels to open. Now when I try it send me to Parallels. I tried the trial version and it wouldn't work. All files are empty.

The Publisher files I had saved are all grayed out not.

I meant to say it send me to Parallels website.

I was under the impression my computer didn't need Parallels to run Windows.

Can you confirm the version of OS X you are running? The HP update should not have caused any problems like this.

The Apple icon, top left of the screen and select About this Mac.

Well thats the latest Mavericks, no doubt about that.

You posted that you used Parrallels to start Windows then said you thought you did not need Parrallels.

    Can you clarify this?

I was told that I really didn't need Parallels becuase there is something on here that can do the same thing. I'm not sure but I thought it was Bootcamp. When I purchased this I was interested in running both Mac and PC programs. In the process I was told so much I'm still not sure what is right.

Parrallels runs Windows under OS X as a virtual machine inside Parrallels. You can then run both Mac applications and Windows applications at the same time.

Bootcamp runs both OS X and Windows but not at the same time, you start the computer in either Mac OS X or Windows.

That may help you decide how you ran Windows.
