What version do you want to update to?

You can get Snow Leopard from the Apple Store, this is the UK store.

    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

From there you can update SL to the latest patch 10.6.8 and activate the App Store.

Mavericks can then be downloaded and installed.

Before you do anything, first check your computer, peripherals and application software are compatible with which version of OS X you want to install, you may need to purchase other items if they are not compatible.

2GB of memory is enough for SL but for good performance too little for Mavericks, that's my opinion, SL would run better with more though.

And don't forget to have a fully tested Backup of your present subsystem before any upgrade is attempted.

Thanks a lot, just purchased SL and will install it when it gets home.

I did check its compatibility with my sound interface, and understand its performance may be limited, so I may need to get more memory.

Much obliged, sir, that was fast and to the point!

If you want to upgrade past SL, check to see if your computer is compatible.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

    • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
    • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

    Your Mac needs:

    • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
    • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
    • 8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
