Q: iphone connection problem

when i connect my ihpone to my mac and open itunes, the ihpone appears in the sidebar with a loading circle next to it and it doesnt finish. as a result i cannot sync my iphone

please help

running latest os X and itunes

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.4
