I have inadvertently changed a preference setting in safari and now have trouble with a particular site regarding identity credentials do I need to uninstall ...and reinstall maverick to fix the problem
or do I save all my documents and "clean up" my mac ...if possible from an earlier date?

Do you know which setting, you should not need to reinstall Mavericks or clean up the Mac to fix this problem.
I do not know which setting or if in the attempt to "fix" the problem, I inadvertantly deleted something?? I tried the extension bugfixer...and it verified "URL" denied.
Have you tried a different web browser such as FireFox, is this the same? If it works you have a workaround until Safari can be fixed.
