    Something has corrupted your mac and changed your hosts file.

    It can be that you use(d) cracked software, or that it is used by crapware like Genieo.

    We are going to take care of that.

    But first you must do following:

    Locate SeagateStorageGauge (look in Applications, and in Utilities): if you do not find it,

    in Finder  go to  MacintoshHD /Library/LaunchAgents/  folder and delete the  com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist   file.

    Restart, empty the trash, now make backups (if you did not make them before).

    Rationale: do never install any "smart" software that came with HDD's, it is counterproductive in OSX.

    Next: in SystemPreferences open Accounts, open the LoginItems Tab, then remove all entries in there, with the minus sign underneath. It will not uninstall them, they will not start automatically after a restart.

    Next: restart.

    Now go about removing Genieo a real mac killer, a serious job, after that we are going to clean other software that you do not want to have on a healthy mac.

    But first the removal of Genieo (thanks to Thomas Reed):

    You may need help, because it is a tricky task to remove the Genieo "malware", but here we go.

    Read this here completely before you begin, make sure that you do understand it.

    If you hesitate, don't do it, and ask help.

    - Before starting this, empty the Trash bin. From now on only items trashed during this operation will be in the Trash bin.

    - During this operation do not empty the Trash bin, so that a wrongly trashed file(s) can be "put back".

    - Do not type the Go to commands but use copy/paste.

    1.

    Click the apple menu (the little apple at top left):

    then choose “force quit” from the menu

    if you see “Genieo” in the ForceQuit window, choose it, and click the blue ForceQuit button. Confirm ForceQuit.

    if you do not see Genieo, go on to:

    2.

    copy this (it copies to the clipboard) from this post here:

    /private/etc/launchd.conf

    just that,

    3.

    Now you must be very very careful, it may cripple your computer if you make a mistake here.

    open Finder: in the top menu bar click GO, a menu opens, choose “Go To Folder” from the menu,

    then in the goto field  paste  (from the earlier copy)

    /private/etc/launchd.conf

    check carefully it must be exactly that, if it checks then click the Go button.

    The folder opens and the  launched.conf  file is highlighted.

    If you do not see such file, smile, and close the Finder window with the little red button, go on to the next point;

    If you do see the highlighted file, concentrate, and drag the file to the Trash bin;

    do not empty the Trash bin.

    4. (You need to be in a administrator account, normally your own account)

    Open Finder again, you are going to remove 9 files (some or all may not be there):

    open the Applications folder and drag the following two files to the trash bin:

       Genieo

       Uninstall Genieo

    (if they are not there even better, go on)

    do not empty the Trash bin

    then in Finder, “GO”,  then “Go To Folder” copy/paste:

    /Library/LaunchAgents/

    and click the Go button;

    in that folder look for files that begin their name with:

    com.genieo….

    and drag them to the Trash bin,

    there are three or less such files.

    do not empty the Trash bin

    then in Finder menu, “GO”,  then “Go To Folder” copy/paste:

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/

    and click the Go button;

    in that folder look for files that begin their name with:

    com.genieo…

    there is one or none,

    drag it to the Trash bin

    do not empty the Trash bin

    then in Finder menu, “GO”, then “Go To Folder” copy/paste:

    /usr/lib/

    and click the Go button;

    in that folder look for the following files:

    libgenkit.dylib

    libimckit.dylib

    libimckitsa.dylib

    drag them to the Trash bin

    do not empty the Trash bin

    5. Now restart the computer.

    After startup, in Finder,  “GO”,  then “Go To Folder” copy/paste:

    /Library/Frameworks/

    and click the Go button;

    in that folder look for a file that begins its name with:

    com.genieoExtra…

    there is one or none,

    drag it to the Trash bin

    do not empty the Trash bin

    6. When all has gone well, remove all browser extensions that you do not trust, especially the Omnibar extension (if it is there):

    Start Safari, click the Preferences in the Safari menu, go to the extensions tab.

    7. Everything OK ?

    Empty the Trash bin…..

    Restart.

    Pfffff

    Report back.

    Thank you Lex Schellings.

    I'm at step 3, after pasting in /private/etc/launchd.conf

    and follow exactly the instruction, I got this message:

    The folder can't be found

    Should I proceed to step 4?

    Aah great, I got confused between "file" and "folder". Interestingly, all the files mentioned in steps 4 and 5 were not there. So I moved on to 6 & 7. It seems better, right now I only have Safari active, but I could try to multi task to see if it hangs again. Could the speed be impacted in part because of my battery? Its condition says "Replace soon".

    Anyhow, I ran the EtreCheck again. Genieo is definitely gone and memory's now freed up quite a chunk. Please let me know if there are further actions I can take to speed up. Thank you so much again for taking time to help me out.

    Good work (did you smile? is part of a happy operation).

    Since the main culprit is gone, we go on.

    My proposal:

    1. uninstall the following applications:

    -- HP apps, (not all if you have a HP printer MF machine.

    -- ElmediaPlayer

    -- in the Applications folder, or the Utilities folder: all that have the name Huawei name in it, even if you have a huawei modem or internet stick.

    2. In  MacintoshHD /Library/StartupItems/  delete

    all entries: especially the rogue Startouc and HWnetmgr (both Huawei). This does not uninstall anything, but prevent those to start up when starting the mac.

    3. In  MacintoshHD /Library/LaunchAgents/   delete

    HWPortCfg.plist (again Huawei).

    4. Is there a reason for having the NTFS driver in your computer? If not uninstall it (SystemPreferences).

    5. Is there a reason to have Chrome installed? It is a well known memory leaker, a good fast browser is Opera, but Safari does very well also.

    6. In  yourname /Library/InternetPlugins/  folder  delete

    CitrixOnlineWebDeploymentPlugin

    7. In  yourname /LIbrary/LaunchAgents/   delete the Adobe plist.

    8. In  MacintoshHD /Library/InternetPlugins/  delete

    the two AdobePDFviewer plugins

    (I also propose to delete the Loki plugin)

    the JavaApplet plugin

    Restart.

    Give me your answer, and

    Remember me that we have to look at the hosts file, since it may be compromised.

    Yes thank you Lex! I'm so happy that everything is running smoothly now. This is awesome!

    Here's the latest EtreCheck report after I removed everything extra that you mentioned, plus a few other apps which I don't use often. There's still Growl and Flip4Mac under System Preference but I don't know how to remove those. Please have a look when you are free. And, I have no idea what hosts files are but we should take a look at them

    Normaly, Growl and Flip4Mac do not cause issues in SnowLeopard. In Mavericks though, I advise against them.

    I am not happy about ElmediaPlayer, it is not really bad.

    If you want a very good general player try VLC (free).

    Now about your hosts file:

    read carefully:

    in the Finder menu GO, choose 'Go To Folder', then copy paste this address in   /private/etc/hosts

    it will find your hosts file selected, copy it to the desktop.

    On the desktop CTL+click that file choose Getinfo, add something to the name, then again CTL+click and choose 'open with', choose TexEdit.

    Then copy what Textedit shows and post it here.

    ElmediaPlayer wasn't in Applications but it still shows up on Launch Daemons (in the report), so I'm not sure if it's not entirely removed or what the deal is. I haven't used it in ages so woulnd't mind getting rid of it.

    About my hosts file, here is the message I got after pasting the address:

    The folder "hosts" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents

    Folder cannot be found.

    OK instead of  /private/etc/hosts   put in the following   /private/etc/

    Then you go to the hosts file (just that name, nothing else) and  copy it to the desktop. Then the rest is the same, rename, copy contents.

    Elmedia: you have to delete two files here:

    MacintoshHD /Library/LaunchDaemons/  delete   com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.daemon.plist

    MacintoshHD /Library/Extensions/      delete     com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.kext

    .

    Indeed, your hosts file is compromised.

    You have a jailbroken iPhone. Do not expect any support for the iPhone.

    But I will tell you how to recover your hosts file:

    Do read this very carefully, and make no mistakes:

    Download  Textwrangler from   http://www.barebones.com

    Install it.

    Go to the original hosts file as above, CTL+click and 'open with', choose Textwrangler.

    When it is open in Textwrangler, remove the last two lines, so that  fe80::1%lo0          localhost

    is the last line. Underneath just type  the character #  as a new line,

    it now ends like this:

    .

    .

    ::1             localhost

    fe80::1%lo0          localhost

    #

    Now save the changed file.

    Normally TW let the permissions unchanged, but to be sure, start DiskUtility, and do the 'repair permissions'.

    That's it.

    Thank you so much! I don't even have an iPhone, sorry, just not an iPhone fan. I did, however, share my laptop with my roommates whenever need to. 2 out of 3 of them use iPhone. I'm trying the method you just taught me now, will report result after it's done.

    On the other hand, I have another MB and been having some problem with this one too (sometimes it just shut down by itself?, Safari browser freezes, no camera detected on the Photo Booth but can be found in Skype). If it's not too much trouble, would you mind taking a look at its report below and let me know if you see anything suspicious?

    About the Hosts file: it may also have been because of the cracked CMM, but the IP address is from iPhone hackers...

    Don't mess around with Textwrangler or in system files.

    Great that we have solved it, now please do the same with changed hosts file, so that I can check if it is changed correctly.

    I will answer your MacbookAir list separately.
