Noted with thanks. After changing the original hosts file exactly as instructed and running Disk Utility repair, I copied the hosts file to my desktop, changed its (copy) name and here is the content:

    ##

    # Host Database

    #

    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.

Now it is OK, you can trash the ones on the desktopm, and maybe uninstall Textwrangler, to avoid that some of your roommates use it...

Please let me know if you would want me to post a separate thread for my Macbook air, to seek your help again

    Your MBA2011:

enough free disk space, and enough ram.

    looks not too bad.

    1. throw everything out of SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath, except for the Canon IJscanner and Dropbox.

    2. Is Nero still installed? if so uninstall and use the built-in burner, if not go to

yourname->Library->LaunchAgents  folder and delete the  com.nero.HSMMonitor.plist   file

    3. Uninstall all Seagate software, then go to

-->go to   MacintoshH->Library->LaunchAgents  folder and delete

    com.hp.messagecenter.launcher.plist

    com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist

-->go to    MacintoshH->Library->LaunchDaemons  folder and delete

    com.seagate.TBDecorator.plist

if it is not there goto  MacintoshH->System->Library->LaunchDaemons   and delete it there.

    4.  go to   yourname->Library->InternetPlugins  and delete

    CitrixOnlineWebDeploymentPlugin

    5.  I advise to uninstall  Adobe Version Cue CS3  (SystemPreferences)

    6.  Do you really need Paragon NTFS? If not uninstall it, if yes, tell me what for.

    7.  I would also advise to uninstall the two Kies apps, you still can backup and sync the Android phone without it.

    Restart, empty the trash.

    That's all.

If you want me to look a bit more on this one, make an image of your Applications and Utilities folders for me.

This MBA is ideal for upgrade to Mavericks (uninstall Growl before).

    Hi Lex,

    1. Done. But I accidentally removed Dropbox.

    2. I don't see Nero in Applications, guess it's been removed. But I also can't find Library under my username.

    3. Seagate was installed when I used an external hard drive for backup.

    4. Still can't find Library under my username.

    5. How do I uninstall this? I just removed it from the System Preferences panel only.

    6. I think this is part of another hard drive backup. Also removed it from System Preference panel.

    7. Done.

    Restarted. Trash emptied out.

I don't know how to uninstall Growl, not even sure how it got installed in the 1st place. Is there any benefits to upgrading to Mavericks?

Here is a screenshot of my Applications and Utilities.

    1. Easy, with the + sign underneath you can bring it back in there: the app is still in Applications folder.

    2. For Username /Library goto the Finder menu  GO and hold the Alt(option) key, there you see the Library, go there and then in the LaunchAgents delete the nero file.

    3. It is counterproductive to install software that come with disks (every brand), just erase/format the disk and use it. So this entry has to go. This is not necessarily true for Raids, but I always advise against them.

    4. see 2.

    5. That is probably enough.

    6. OK, now go to  MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchAgents  and delete the Paragon entry there.

If it is not there goto  MacintoshHD->System->Library->LaunchAgents and look there (be careful there).

    7. Yes, Mavericks is much more efficient and even more user friendly than Lion. And safer, better security I mean.

    Apps:

you may uninstall the Seagate Diagnostics (Uitilities).

And you may have problems with MSOffice 2008, I am not sure (Office2011, would be OK).

Ready. Think about it and read about it, do not hurry.

    Hi Lex,

Thank you for your detailed instructions. This is just getting a bit more complicated. It seems that the Library under my name might have been erased at some point because it's just not there when I clicked on it (from Finder/GO while holding down Alt).

I have another account on this computer, which is just a Standard account, not Admin, but that one does show everything in the Library under the username. I uninstalled all the Seagate software. But Nero, Paragon and CitrixOnline are no where to be found, not even when I searched for it.

This other account, the standard one, is imported via Time Machine from another Macbook a while ago. The only thing I wanted to port over was my old emails in Mail, but that didn't work. Then I tried to erase this account, but that also didn't work. So now I have an extra account there, with nothing to do.

I'll think about updating to Mavericks and MS Office 2011. In the mean time, I'm actually more interested in upgrading my RAM and HD first, if possible.

Should I try to back up and then reset everything? I don't remember if this one came with an installation disk, I'll have to look for it.

    Curious.

First make the "standard" account a full administrator account, Do that in the original account.

Then you have what you want.  Then you can later delete the crippled account. Do you still have the TM backup?

In the "new" admin account (you got it from the TM, correct) look in yourname-> Library-> Mail-> there should be a folder called V2: that is where all the emails are. Now leave the Finder open in the Mail folder and enter the TM backup. It should open with Finder in the same Mail folder, when the V2 folder is there, find the date on which the V2 folder was uncompromised, select the V2 folder and restore.

Yep, I still have the TM for it. Will find it and restore V2 as you suggested. Moron me still have no idea how I could have erased Library in the original admin account . Hope that didnt' screw up anything major. It's not like I have been using TM for this Macbook Air at all, just started recently.

I'm having a problem with my java plugin, think it was deleted when I was cleaning up. Do you know where I can get Java 6? The latest is Java 7 but keepvid doesn't work with it. I use keepvid for youtube video. I did some google search but couldn't get Java 6. Any idea?

When you use apps that need Java, you better look for other apps.

But for now: you find Java on the Oracle websites. You first have to "uninstall" the v7, but it is all explained on the Oracle sites.

Java6 has bad security leaks, Java7 is even worse. I threw it out completely (only the internet banking access needed it) and I have no regrets.

    Hi Lex,

V2 is no where to be found in the TM but that's okay, I can live without the Mail backup of this older account. However, I'd like to upgrade to Mavericks as you recommended and am not quite sure what the next step is. This is what I did.

    1) I have uninstalled Growl.

    2) I made the secondary account admin (this is the one with User Library intact). Meanwhile, the original account (with deleted User Library) is still admin.

    3) Since all of my work is store in the original admin account, I have 2 options:

    a) Move all my files, folders and app settings to the new admin account, then delete the old admin account that's missing User Library. I did some research on the forum, this seems complicated, can easily mess up the setting, so I'm not doing it yet.

    b) Re-install the OS to restore the User Library. This requires an installation CD which I can order from Apple.

Any advice on which option is better for a non-technie person like me? Is it really neccessary to restore the User Library before upgrading to Mavericks? I'd rather not mess with the original admin account if I don't need to since all my work is on it. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Pheww, thank you

You do not need a CD "to restore the Library": just start the mac with CMD+R and choose the restore OSX: it will restore the OSX Lion and leave all your user data alone.
