Carrier Unlock Questions...

Having some trouble unlocking my phone in France, and I'm wondering, how long is an unlock key effective on AT&T? Are there any actions that can invalidate an unlock request or disable my ability to unlock my phone, such as being overseas, or resetting my phone for example.
