Q: Why did Mavericks slow down my MBP?

Did some digging in Discussions and found that a slow-down problem is common after installing Mavericks.

EtreCheck was recommended as a diagnostic first step. I have  a report but I am not confident to act on any items without advice. Here it is - help appreciated.

    Kevin;

    Thanks;

    I can't find the iStat app on my MBP. These iStat files may be leftovers from some earlier time?

    Download and run Find Any File to search for any file with  "iStat" in its name.

    FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. Any file you find can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop if you determine it's one that needs removal.

    Thanks OT;

    I just ran EasyFind and searched in Spotlight.

    In Spotlight I found this;

    iStat Menus.prefPane

    In EasyFind I found this;

    bistats.db

    com.bjango.istatlocal.plist

    Looks like app is missing but why do these searches have different results, or more important what should I do?

    Bruce,

    You can delete iSat widget from the Dashboard page, as I said.

    If it is not there look in

    MacintoshHD -> Library -> Widgets  folder:

    if the iStat widget is in there, delete it

    or look in the same folder in yournam Library: in Finder select the GO menu form the menubar, click it, and hold the Alt(option) key, then click the Library,

    in there click the Widgets folder, look if the iStat widget is in there, delete it.

    If you did not find it at all, delete the

    com.bjango.istatlocal.plist

    (you can do that in asyfind), this is the plist of iStatPro.

    The other plist you found in Spotlight is from iStat Menus

    The iStat files that are causing problems for people who had iStat installed & running in their menubars prior to upgrading to Mav, and who *may have* run the iStat uninstaller post-Mav installation, will never see the iStat files that are the causes of so many strangenesses in Mav, despite having run its [quote]"uninstaller."[endquote]

    Spotlight won't show most all system files, which the left-behind iStat problem files are categorized as, so the quickest way to find the iStat problem files is to use a 3rd party file finder that will show ALL files (incl invisible system files and/or folders) and, ideally, will also give you the option to show the found files within the file's containing folder/system folder in a right-click-on-the-file-icon context menu. That's usually the only way you can delete most system files.... by being right in the folder that the file in question is contained within, Command-Deleting it, & then entering your password to actually delete it.

    This kind of an iStat "background problem-file spectre" is unusual to see with 3rd party apps made for OSX, in my experience; it's actually more like a Windoze type of issue than a Mac issue as I see it, in my 25 years of experiences with both OS's (16 years on the Darth Vader side. uggh).

    RE: Looked in both Widget folders and not found so I guess I am in the clear!

    That is NO guarantee of ANYTHING other than the actual *.widget and/or *.app file is gone from your hard drive. Usually.

    System files from or created by those are what you've got to concern yourself with, Bruce, NOT the overtly visible ones that Spotlight shows you. This is detective work, man. lol Similar to the old Windoz' track-down-the-missing-DLL-days.

    Good luck And have fun. You're gonna be learnin' stuff......

    KK

    Out........

    You have to remove the plist as I said.

    Although not supported anymore, iStatPro does not cause issues often in Mavericks, but in effect when you have a good running system, you do not need it. Also you do not need iStatMenus.

    Lex, Kevin, OT

    Thanks for your effort to help. My MBP is much faster now without Akamai and iStat.

    At first I did not use EasyFind correctly and was only searching for iStat at the Home level. When I switched to HD level I found a folder and other stuff in the root Library. They showed up in EasyFind, but I had to go to Finder to delete these.

    Learning curve is steep...

    Bruce
