Feb 1, 2015 1:27 PM in response to bbigssorby wavecrest5,Try removing the pages app from the dock and then downloading the pages app again (you should no longer receive "the required index.xml file is missing" error message. Apparently installing a new version of pages doesn't always update the app icon in the dock to the most recent version.

Feb 1, 2015 2:17 PM in response to wavecrest5by PeterBreis0807,That is wrong advice and you appear to have repeated it all over the forum.
All Pages files no matter what version have the same file extension, .pages, despite being radically different formats and that is the problem. The System does not distinguish between them when you double click on the file, it opens the first version of Pages it encounters.
You need to right click on the file and choose the correct App version for the file. Unfortunately there are no clues to tell you which is which.
If you are unhappy with this and the removal of over 100 features plus the problems with transmitting files across devices, servers and different versions of OS X, rate/review Pages 5.5.2 in the App Store.

Only looking for an answer.. please no opinions ! Thanks in advance for any help.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
As ever, open the correct version of Pages for your file.
Instead of double clicking on the file, right click and choose.

Mar 7, 2015 5:47 PM in response to Squidgeybumby xcinja,Great advice PeterBreis! I wish I figured that out sooner to right click to use an alternate version of Pages.
I also used another method, which may be more complicated..
but I emailed it to myself and opened it via google drive and used the app cloud convert to convert my file over.

Mar 11, 2015 8:46 AM in response to bbigssorby unMike,This worked for me:
Go to https://cloudconvert.com/
Convert your pages files to .doc files and either use Word, or Open office, or open them back up in your Pages.app. When you save them, they will be in the correct format.

Apr 24, 2015 7:40 AM in response to PeterBreis0807by bumberchute,Nicely articulated points. This .xml issue happened to me at mission-critical when I needed Pages to perform well and instead it added intense stress to an already stressful situation - trying to invoice someone to get paid... so I may set up a Genius Bar appointment, just to be able to deliver the message - "what if your Apple store enterprise software refused to ring up sales - you couldn't perform transactions - and to get an answer/fix, you needed to wait 3 days for the Corporate Genius Bar to help - meanwhile no sales could be conducted - that's the situation I was put in... "Get it, Genius?"

May 15, 2015 11:13 AM in response to bbigssorby carolefrommaple valley,I have on my 2009 MacBook Pro both Pages 4.1 and Pages 5.2.2. I've been having the same problem. After reading all below
I decided to try something and here's what I learned: If I make sure that both Pages icons on the menu bar are "closed" then I can open any pages file with
no problem by double clicking. At least, its worked today when I tried it out several times. Therefore, you may not be able to have open
a file from each of the Pages apps at the same time.

Level 8 (35,534 points)
Mac OS XThat is not true.
I frequently work with both Pages .09 and Pages 5.5.3 open.
OSX will tend to try and open a file with whatever Pages may already be open but that is not guarranteed.
As has been repeated over and over again, right click on the file and choose the correct version to open it with.
Double clicking you are playing Russsian Roulette.

May 30, 2015 8:11 AM in response to bbigssorby sudirende,I have no idea how to find the old Pages to open and save the files for the new one, so this was my workaround.
I used my old iPhone, pulled the document into Pages there, which was able to open it, emailed it as a Word document to myself. It opened and converted back just fine. Worked on my iPad which has up to date iOS as well.
