You need to update with iTunes, connected to your computer.
Please backup before you do the update by right clicking on your iPhone from the left column
You will need to restore the same way after update.

My windows 7 pc does not have itunes application nessessary to to back up the iphone and can't find a download for this which is compatible with the iphone 4.2.1
The phone has suffered some water damage and is going to hospital ie the apple genious bar tomorrow they said do a backup before comming in as they may do a factory reset
Have transfered media via tether but cannot do contacts
sadly I am unable to open my contacts app on my phone :-(
As I am a first timer at any kind of backup I would greatly appreciate some step by step advice
