Time Machine won't finish backup

I am having issues backing up my Macbook Pro (2010) [Running OS X Mavericks] to my external hard drive (partitioned into 2 parts).

The partition that i have been using to back up my macbook is now not working. The last backup I had was about 3 months ago.

This is the main issue:

When I go to do a manual backup of my system it takes about 20-30 minutes to calculate changes (reasonable, considering the fact that it's been a while), but after that step it begins to backup my computer, it will say "Calculating TIme Remaining" and won't change, it will also say how much it has copied (ex. 160 mb) but that number won't change.

I've waited almost two hours for it to complete and tried to restart the backup over and over with no success.

I've checked if the disk if fine and DIsk Utility says it appears to be good so I'm not sure what is wrong.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

There wasn't anything repeating except for

2014-03-30 12:26:39.984 AM mdworker[7678]: (Warning) Import: Bad path:

but this was because spotlight was trying to index one of my drives (not the backup one)

These are messages that i'm concerned about though, they always appear in the console (but don't repeat) when I try to back up:

2014-03-30 12:28:57.408 AM com.apple.backupd[7698]: Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD

2014-03-30 12:38:32.407 AM com.apple.backupd[7698]: Not using file event preflight for Macintosh HD

sorry, here's the log for the back up i believe

2014-03-30 12:49:33.597 AM com.apple.backupd[7698]: Backup canceled.

Backup was canceled due to the status bar not changing at all and the message "Calculating Time Remaining" not going away.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I have exactly the same problem. The good news is that (at least for me) the backup succeeds when I eject the other partition. You said you also have the external drive split into two partitions. Have you tried ejecting the other partition and attempting the backup with only the backup partition mounted?

Good luck!
